Day 1 “Yes, that’s ME” poem for “30 Poems in 30 Days" #NationalPoetryMonth

WELCOME to National Poetry Month!! Cheers!! Some of you reading this have been joining in now for several years, others may be completely new!! The first day of the “30 Poems in 30 Days” is always a fun one to try out a poem to get to know each other.

So, here’s just a few “notes” about what I’m doing. This is the SIXTH year that I will be running a poetry challenge here on my blog. It’s lots of fun and I am convinced that ANYONE can write poetry if they just follow the instructions and examples. I hope many of you write lots of poetry, even the flowing, lyrical, delicious, thought-provoking poetry after the style of many famous poets. But I also know that just following along in these more basic poetry forms CAN produce surprising and AMAZING poetry that is just delightful and often just as thought-provoking as any of the great poets out there.

Please remember – you may LINK to this post but you MAY NOT copy and paste my instructions or examples. It’s true, anyone can Google “How to write” this type or that type of poetry, but I have spent considerable time putting these posts together with my own voice and personality and anything I post on my blog is automatically copyrighted, INCLUDING any poetry that participants write in the comments here on my blog. So, please, just respect everyone’s creative work and we will respect yours.

A few ideas for sharing your poems: You can leave a copy of it each time (or however many times you wish) here in the comments of this blog, you can post your poems on your FB or Instagram pages, on your OWN blog, IN our FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/178557275869627/, or simply create your own little notebook or journal of poems for this year’s challenge for yourself and your family.

Ready? Great!! OK, here’s an easy one to start with (well, easy, except for the being vulnerable part).

Let’s get to know each other – this is simply a “Fill in the blank” style of poem.
Finish each of these lines by revealing something about yourself – it can be serious our humorous – up to you. No rhyming or word or syllable counts to worry about with this poetry form. When you are done – you will have completed a “Yes, that’s ME” poem.

Yes, that’s me
Look and you’ll see
My hair ___________
My eyes __________
My arms __________
My hands _________
My heart _________
I’m ______________
I never ___________
My friends ________
I live _____________
I hope ____________
I dream ___________
It’s all clear as can be
That’s positively, absolutely me

Here’s an example of one I wrote (just filling in the rest of the sentences) a few years ago:

Yes, that’s me
Look and you’ll see
My hair has a mind of its own
My eyes see what’s important
My arms still have the strength for lots of hugs
My hands are always busy
My heart has been broken but still beats when it should
I’m always learning
I never get bored
My friends are a nice variety
I live to do the best I can
I hope I make a difference
I dream of possibilities
It’s all clear as can be
That’s positively, absolutely me

Yes, that’s me
Look and you’ll see
My hair may be grey now, but it’s still my crowning glory
My eyes are brand new and enjoying seeing clearly again the wonders of nature
My arms are full of strength and love for all I see
My hands don’t like being still when there’s so much to do
My heart is yearning for peace and love in the world
I’m happiest when my loved one are near me
I never ever want to stop singing
My friends can depend on me
I live the best way I can
I hope I do enough
I dream of all my loved ones happy and joyful
It’s clear as can be
That’s positively, absolutely me!

Yes, that’s me
Look and you’ll see
My hair is brown and gray
My eyes are blue, gray and a little bloodshot
My arms are strong yet soft
My hands are big and busy
My heart is tender
I’m loving and giving of self
I never hold a grudge
My friends are much like myself
I live for today
I hope for the best
I dream about a forever family
It’s all clear as can be
That’s positively, absolutely me

In honor of Easter I thought of this idea...

Yes, that’s me
Look and you’ll see
My hair white
My eyes pure
My arms are out stretched
My hands are pierced
My heart is full of love
I am here
I never lie
My friends do my will
I live, I AM
I hope you will come unto me
I dream of now and forever
It’s all clear as can be
That’s positively, absolutely me

Yes, that’s me, so look and you’ll see,
A rhyming poem about little ole me.
My hair sometimes curly or sometimes it’s straight
Depends on the day, if I’m running late,
My eyes are the color of my mom’s that were brown,
My arms love to garden and dig in the ground.
My hands want to help with the problems I find,
My heart yearns to be understanding and kind,
I’m a mother, an Oma, an auntie a niece,
I never have traveled to Rome or to Nice.
My friends are my treasure, there’s only a few,
I live for my Savior, I try to be true.
I hope I can do all I came here to do,
I dream of the past and accomplishments too.
Well that’s all there’s to me, it’s clear as can be
That’s positively, absolutely, all of it’s me.

Yes, this me
Look and you’ll see
What I was, am & can be
My hair was full of body, thick & flowing
My hair is thin, flat & always tied up
My hair can be my sacrifice, my tiger stripes, earned from a life worth living
My eyes were innocent, pure & white
My eyes are bloodshot, tired & sleepless
My eyes can be a window to my love, loss & faith never failing
My arms were weak, awkward & ever learning
My arms are strong, gentle & ever reaching
My arms can be comfort, protection & ever praying
My hands were small, smooth & grasping
My hands are weathered, rough & working
My hands can be helpers, examples & loving
My heart was tender, hopeful, romantic
My heart is scarred, passionate, obsessive
My heart can be a sanctuary, forgiveness, understanding
I’m the sum of my parts & each little piece
All at once big & oh very small
I’m never one thing & all things eternally
My friends come & go while each part remembers
I live in the wisdom I am connected to my was, am & can be
This is always my hope to stay the same while ever changing
I cant wait to dream in eternal perspectives so I can feel all of me fully
It’s all so clear in was, am & can be
This is positively, absolutely me trying to the best of me

Yes, that’s me
Look and you’ll see
May hair is as natural
No more dye for me
My eyes are bright
Even though it’s hard to see
My arms are meant to hold you tight
My heart sings with joy and delight
I’m quite happy I’ll have you know
I never want to let this feeling go
My friends are many, the see me through
I live to be an example in all I do
I hope one day my Lord I’ll meet
I dream I’ll sit at His feet
It’s all clear as can be
That’s positively, absolutely me
