Day 12 - Shadorma Poem ” for #NationalPoetryMonth “30 Poems in 30 Days”

I thought it would be fun to share a poetry form that is new to me, so I’m guessing it’s going to be new to many of you. It is said to have originated in Spain, but I haven’t been able to document that.

It’s called “Shadorama” and it is made up of 6 lines per stanza with a specific syllable count, but no need for rhyming.

It can be a one-verse stand-alone poem or you can string together as many stanzas as you wish to complete your poem.

Before I share the format – I thought I might suggest a couple of crazy ideas for today’s poem (strictly suggestions, of course): Today, April 12th is “Walk on Your Wild Side Day.” It’s also “D.E.A.R. Day,” which stands for “Drop Everything and Read Day,” in honor of Beverly Cleary (today, April 12th, is her 100th birthday), who wrote about D.E.A.R. in Ramona Quimby, Age 8. So, you MIGHT want to create you poem about your wild side or perhaps write a Shadorma poem about a favorite book or about reading. Just a thought.

There is no rhyming scheme but the syllables per line are precise: 3/5/3/3/7/5

Line 1 ~ has 3 syllables
Line 2 ~ has 5 syllables
Line 3 ~ is back to 3 syllables
Line 4 ~ also has 3 syllables
Line 5 ~ has 7 syllables
Line 6 ~ end in 5 syllables

So, here’s my example, such as it is:

My wild side
Might be a surprise
To my friends
And others
Who think me to be low key
It’s a childhood wish

My wild side
Likes to see the clouds
Up close at
Eye level
Flying a helicopter
Landing on buildings

Up and down
Back and forth, hover
Save the day,
Rescue squad,
I think I would have been great
But now it’s too late

Also, if you choose to post your poems on your own blog ~ that’s awesome. But PLEASE don’t just copy and paste my daily instructions, but rather post your poem on your blog or you FB wall or wherever AND LINK BACK TO THIS BLOG POST for others to come here to read the instructions. I’ve spent considerable time researching the poetry forms and writing them up to share with you. Thanks for respecting my work.

My poem for today.
There are books
That draw you right in
And some books
Turn you off
And then my favorite reads
Are ones that inspire.

Reading is
Extr'ordinary,
Enlight'ing
Young and Old,
Opening worlds of wonder
To curious minds.

READING WHILE...

When I was young
I read while walking
Into things
Now I read
While running through the desert
Can end in stickers.
