Day 10 - 2015 How to write a Clerihew Poem

"30 poems in 30 days" #NationalPoetryMonth

A clerihew is a RHYMING poem that is four lines long.

The Clerihew poem takes its name from its creator, Edmund Clerihew Bentley, 20th century humorist and novelist.

It's fun little poem about a PERSON, generally someone famous OR you can make it about someone you care about. Often whimsical, it's meant to be funny (not rude-funny, but cute-funny).

Here are the basic instructions:

1. It is four lines long.

2. Rhyming pattern of A-A-B-B (The ending words of the first and second lines rhyme with each other, and the ending words of the third and fourth lines rhyme with each other)

3. The FIRST line names a person - it can only have their name or, it needs to end with their name because the second line ends with something that rhymes with their name.

4. A clerihew should be funny.

Here's mine:

You may very well know Jim Abney,
He’s every bit as sweet as Bambi,
He likes to wrestle, laugh and leap,
But by afternoon, he falls asleep!

Not sure how humorous these are, but I came up with two

I'm so glad that I know Stephanie Abney
She's taught me to rhyme and I'm happy
Her poetry inspires me to give it a try
I can make others laugh or even cry

My friend on the net is Stephanie Abney
Each April she challenges me to write poetry
She likes to write, blog, and tweet
She keeps me on my feet!

Here's my offering for the day. Thanks for doing this with and for us, Stephanie. I'm doing so many other things every day that it'd be tougher to hunt these examples down and write the poetry. http://murph4slaw.blogspot.com/2015/04/baby-ben-ten.html

I love my mother Alice
She always take care of us
Sewing, genealogy and crafting
are then things that make her take wing.

All my kids :)

Last name pronunciation guide: Saw-nya-meh-nee

Cailin Elisabeth Sagnimeni
Two front teeth you haven't any
With a laugh and a sigh, you go fluttering by
Whimsical, daring, and kind, social butterfly

Jenna Elaine Sagnimeni
At times goes by Jenn, but not Jenny.
She is so good at sharing and her treats she'll forsake
But today's treat she kept 'cause she "needed a break!"

Unique rhymes to your name, there aren't many,
You jump on our couch, run down halls, scream and shout
We know that you're coming - look out!

Lexington Elise Sagnimeni
You cost us a pretty penny
We thought we were through, no more pink, no more blue
So now we go yardsale-ing to clothe you!

I married a man named Royal.
I have found him to be quite loyal.
He is the greatest catch I have seen.
Plus he treats me just like a queen!

Have you met a girl named Kaylie,
She’s happy as can be.
She likes to sing and play with toys,
But at this age, not much with boys.
